Insulin Resistance: Insulin resistance effects between 50-70% of women with PCOS and this number may be even higher. Insulin resistance contributes to symptoms such as weight gain, irregular periods, and difficulty managing blood sugar levels and can eventually lead to type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. So what exactly is insulin resistance? IR is a condition in which the body’s cells become less responsive to the hormone insulin. Insulin helps glucose enter the cells to be used as energy. When the cells become less responsive to insulin, blood sugar levels rise and the pancreas releases more insulin to compensate.

Symptoms of insulin resistance include: fatigue, difficulty losing weight, dark patches on the skin, high blood sugar levels, increased hunger or thirst, frequent urination, while some may not experience any symptoms.

How can we prevent/reverse insulin resistance?

-daily exercise (walking is great)

-healthy, whole food diet

-no naked carbs (never eat a car by itself)

-get enough sleep

-manage stress

-avoid smoking and limit alcohol
